Importance of Accurate Uterine Examination in Infertility Treatment

Enhancing Embryo Implantation Success with Contrast Ultrasound

Dr. Farahnaz Farzaneh, a subspecialist in infertility and a surgeon at Shahid Akbarabadi Educational and Medical Center, emphasizes the critical role of contrast ultrasound (Saline Infusion Sonohysterography, SIS) in the infertility treatment process. This accurate, cost-effective, and safe diagnostic tool is essential for identifying uterine lesions, thereby increasing the likelihood of successful embryo implantation.

In an interview, Dr. Farzaneh highlighted that precise diagnosis of the uterine cavity can significantly impact the success of embryo implantation. SIS is particularly effective in detecting small lesions, such as endometrial polyps, submucosal fibroids, and intrauterine adhesions, which conventional ultrasounds may overlook. This method can identify lesions as small as 2 to 3 millimeters with high accuracy.

The advantages of SIS over traditional diagnostic tools are notable. It offers superior differentiation of pathological lesions compared to conventional transvaginal ultrasound (TVS), enhancing the chances of successful implantation and embryo transfer prior to in vitro fertilization (IVF). While hysterosalpingography (HSG) remains the gold standard for assessing tubal patency, SIS provides a more detailed examination of the endometrial tissue with less discomfort for the patient. As a non-invasive and economical procedure, SIS effectively reduces the need for unnecessary hysteroscopies.

Dr. Farzaneh also stressed the importance of timing for optimal results. The ideal window for conducting this ultrasound is during the early proliferative phase of the menstrual cycle, specifically between days 5 and 10. During this period, the endometrium is at its thinnest, minimizing the risk of diagnostic errors related to normal uterine folds being mistaken for polyps.

In conclusion, contrast ultrasound (SIS) is a vital tool in the infertility treatment landscape, contributing to improved diagnostic accuracy and better outcomes for patients seeking to conceive.
