Mission and Objectives
The mission of the Department of Medical Physics is to educate, conduct research, and train students to enhance their knowledge and understanding in the field of medical sciences. The focus is particularly on the integration and application of basic sciences and physics in medicine. To achieve this mission, the department undertakes the following actions:
History
The Department of Medical Physics was established in 1973 as part of the Iran University of Medical Sciences, located in the Ayat A. Taleghani Medical Complex (Batmanqlich Medical Education Complex). Initially, Dr. Fatureh Chi managed the department, followed by Dr. Abolfazl Rasouli. The department was responsible for conducting medical physics classes and laboratories for medical students, with support from experts such as Mr. Ershadi and Mr. Kaveh Katouzi.
From 1979 to 1997, Dr. Bahram Boluri led the department, with Dr. Ali Akbar Sharafi managing it during the early 1990s. Throughout these years, the department expanded its infrastructure with assistance from specialists in rehabilitation and paramedicine.
Over the years, the department has introduced master's and specialized doctorate programs in medical physics and medical imaging technology. The number of faculty members and research facilities has also increased significantly.
By 2025, the department has successfully conducted 26 master's courses and 16 doctorate courses in medical physics, along with 8 master's courses in medical imaging technology. Faculty members are actively researching areas such as radiotherapy, radiobiology, dosimetry, ultrasound, optics and lasers, nuclear medicine, and the application of nanoparticles in medical physics and imaging.
Introduction to Medical Physics
Medical physics is a branch of applied physics focused on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of human diseases through the application of physical principles, methods, and technologies in clinical medicine and research. The field has rapidly developed over the past two decades, and it encompasses several subfields, including:
This structured overview highlights the Department's commitment to advancing knowledge and practice in medical physics, aligning with international standards in medical education and research.
